Songs that Define the INTJ

There are just certain songs out there that make me think that is so INTJ. This post shouldn't start a full on debate of why these songs aren't INTJ-like or someone providing empirical evidence of why I am wrong. Also, I am not claiming that any of these performers are INTJs. These songs, in my opinion, create a recognition of identification. Let me also add, I am not rating in order to preference. Some selections have explicit lyrics and is labeled as such.

1# Only - Nine Inch Nails [Explicit]

 Reason: Lyrics

Kinda drifting into the abstract in terms of how I see myself
Sometimes I think I can see right through myself

Reminds me of Introverted Intuition.
Less concerned about fitting into the world
Your world that is

Just an example of the INTJ's independent and cynical nature.

#2 Gary Numan - Are Friends Electric?

Reason: There is something about the lyrical imagery that strikes me as bleak observation that truly befits the INTJ.
It's cold outside
And the paint's peeling off of my walls

An analogy of emotions comparable to environmental discomfort.
So now I'm alone
Now I can think for myself
About little deals
And issues
And things that I just don't understand
The ability to connect everything- reflection

#3 Garbage - Not Your Kind of People

 Reason: Lyrics
We are not your kind of people.
Speak a different language.
We see through your lies.
We are not your kind of people.
Won't be cast as demons,
Creatures you despise.

Do I really need to explain? (We are extraordinary people)

#4 Kool & Kass - Pleasance (WDGAF) [Explicit]

Reason: This is a little off the beaten path and every time it plays, it feels like an anthem.
Lyrics:
Keep it stupid, never scared of a better flow
Words from a hat like barely a metaphor
Not being "scared of a better flow" is about being innovative and improving without fear of being criticized.  "words from a hat" is abstractly describing thoughts in translation with "like barely a metaphor" as the actual metaphor. INTJs commonly speak and think this way. Also a very clever play on words.

Not giving a fuck is the predisposition of this type.
Flip my money back and forth
I don't listen to anybody anymore
I know I said it before
Fuck it
I do what I want
You can suck it

Two tears in a bucket

 #5 Flobots - Handlebars

 Reason: Lyrics
I can ride my bike with no handlebars
Riding a bike without handlebars is about being an independent free-thinker which is closely associated with the INTJ.
I'm all curled up with a book to read
The importance of education and the comfort of gathering information.
Me and my friends understand the future
I see the strings that control the systems
The meaning is very future-oriented and connecting the patterns in the system which is how an INTJ processes information using Introverted Intuition.

#6 Bodycount - Institutionalized [Explicit]

This is an incredible revamp of Suicidal Tendencies - Institutionalized.
  Reason: The entire video/song.

 #7 Wombats - Last Night I Dreamt...

Reason: I'll just leave this one here for you to analyze for yourself.

I hope you have enjoyed the mostly interpreted selections. What song(s) make you think that's so INTJ? Share your choices in the comments.

Does the INTJ Match Burn?

The likelihood of an INTJ heterosexual relationship, by the numbers, is quite low in terms of probability. Considering male INTJs only comprise about 2% of the population and females come in at a whopping 0.8%, these intuitives types have a subdued  occurrence in the population. Being such a rare type can only attribute to lack of possibilities for hooking-up in the real world. Lack of commonality creates difficulties in communication and relatability. So, as improbable as it is, what if two INTJs formed a union? Are they too much alike or would it spark an intense fire? It's definitely a subject that deserves speculating and a picture worth painting.

Relationship Distance

Relationship Distance would be measured by the variables- silence and privacy. The normal measure would be great for an INTJ being introverted, relying on inward intuition, thinking in their heads, and having a high level of independence. The need for privacy would be tremendous to contain all of the inner workings and cognitive style. So, it would be assumed that the mirrored types would double the amount of Relationship Distance but actually these variables and their differences would be divided to form a ratio. An elevated need for quiet time and privacy develops in a nearly equivalent amount and would result in a reduced difference that nearly cancels each other out. Thus creating:

*Mutual respect for privacy and lowered anxiety of it being violated.
*Observation of need for quiet and moments alone.
*Trust and openness are more easily achieved with less Relationship Distance.

Wouldn't it be a relief to know your significant other isn't going to read your emails, scan though your texts, and look over your shoulder while on the laptop/phone? When two people can recognize those needs, it's the ultimate environment for trust.

Intuition

INTJs have a language all their own. It's heavily laden with analogies and metaphors. Associations help us to connect new ideas and concepts. We not only communicate to others in this fashion but also in our own heads. Basically, people who don't speak in this manner have difficulty understanding it conversationally. As an INTJ, going out on a first blind date with an ES type, the conversation might go a little like this:

ESXX- So, what do you like to do for fun?
INTJ- (Blankly stares and let's the light fixture on the ceiling become the focal point)
ESXX- I like thrill sports. Sky-diving, off-roading, hunting! You like that?
INTJ-.... I like chess. It's a metaphor for life. You can tell so much about a person by the way they play. You can know their level of aggression, what they value, how passionate they are, cleverness, and so much more. My favorite piece is the Bishop but I shouldn't give myself away so soon.
ESXX- You musta went to college.

When two INTJs have a conversation, it is an exciting ordeal and quite a show for an observer. They will participate in dark humor, inside jokes, and connecting ideas with lightning moments of realizations. If one INTJ builds a framework and gathers information and inspiration, imagine what they can do together. Two minds working as one to create endless possibilities.

Emotions

I know what you must be thinking. What emotions, right? One should never be confused with the INTJs ability to show or willingness to discuss emotions as opposed to the actual feelings that run deep. I think all INTJs can agree about certain phrases that make our skin crawl. For example:

* "We need to have a talk about things, later"
By things you mean feelings, your feelings, and how I don't relate, react, care, feel...
And oh yes, by all means, let's talk when it is convenient for you. Meanwhile, I'll create a catastrophic dialogue in my head when all the while you want to switch the times we walk the dogs. (sigh)

* "What are you thinking/feeling?"
It's interchangeable, isn't it? But the truth is you want to know what I FEEL about you or the level at which I feel for you. If I felt comfortable telling you, I would. But I don't and forcing me to do so will only increase our "Relationship Distance".
The actual response to this question is usually....(crickets)....
* "What do you think our future is like?"
This is probably a question that is asked for the talk that happens later. If you have to ask, it means you have no idea how to speculate for yourself. Obviously, if it isn't understood or felt by both parties, then a future is highly unlikely.

For two INTJs there wouldn't be forced talks and demands just a knowing. Sharing intimate thoughts would present at the right time without pushing or prodding. I would imagine two mirrors, shining and reflecting. Two souls taking in the meaning and depth. No explanation necessary.

If you are an INTJ that is in a relationship with another INTJ, Please leave a comment.

The Introvert's Paradox

I've always wondered why it is so challenging to exist as an introvert and now I have the answer. This will apply to any introverted type but the theory will be applied to the INTJ. In contrast, the extravert will be examined as they do not experience the same dilemma.

The development of the paradox began while reading The Introvert Advantage by Marti Olsen Laney, Psy.D. Within the book, there was a chapter that compared the pathway of the neurotransmitters for both introverts and extraverts. The introvert's pathway was longer and more involved by including a scenic route to the frontal lobe. The frontal lobe is responsible for reasoning and inner dialogue. Ah, yes. There is nothing quite like the hypothetical conversation before a scheduled personal conference with your employer or remembering everything stupid you've ever said while trying to sleep. Such an advantage. Actually, this is where I had my Ah-Ha moment. This difference in brain behavior must have an implication on the MBTI!

Out of the many proceeding additional books I've read, I'm Not Crazy: I'm Just Not You by Sarah Albritton Roger Pearman, holds some significant value. The concept of "Behavioral Expression" proved to be quite interesting. Every MBTI types has an Outer Image, Motivator, Inner Tension, Cognitive Core, and Teacher. These expressions can be found by applying patterns to the four letter personality temperament.

The Outer Image would look like this:

So, the Outer Image for the ENTP is EP and the INTJ's Outer Image is IJ. Unfortunately, the book was vague about what it really means other than this is how the world views our personalities. So by definition, the impression I provide the world with is IJ. Do people see me as introverted and judging? I know that my primary cognitive function is Introverted Intuition and that is actually a perceiving function. Then I looked at the ENTP and thought about the world seeing them as EP and their primary function is Extraverted Intuition. The world is going to see them by how they mainly operate. My next Ah-Ha moment is then confirmed by one of the creators of the MBTI. No, not Carl Jung. He is the father of cognitive functions but Myers and Briggs added the J and P elements which brought forth more depth to typology.

The next book that caught my interest explained the discrepancy between the visible functions of extraverts and introverts. Gifts Differing by Isabella Myers delves into the functions and just how differently introverts operate.
The INTJ does not show Introverted Intuition to the world, instead, they put forth the second best function, Extraverted Thinking. It makes sense that we apply our most developed extraverted function, externally.

The analogy used went something like this:

The primary function (Ni) is the General and his Aide (Te) is our auxiliary function. For introverts, the General is too busy and remains in the tent. He sends his Aide to greet the outsiders to deal with them accordingly and conserves his efforts for more important, personal business.

We (INTJs) show the world our Extraverted Thinking. Cold, calculating, and rational. We make decisions impersonally through organization and analysis. Conversely, we show the ones we are closest to our Introverted Intuition which is more free-spirited and speculative. Ni is excited and enthusiastic about ideas that appeal to us and if someone from the outside wants to get closer, they show an interest in our big-picture projects and plans.

If they want to get closer, this could be difficult. They would have to see through our Te and figure out the heart of us. This is why intuitives relate so well to other intuitives. There is an understanding of subconscious symbols and all of which is unsaid and unseen. Basically, introverts have a shell. An exterior which protects that energy we can only use so spareingly on others, especially people on the outside.

The paradox is we are not what we seem and what we seem is not our best and most accurate way of functioning. Myers suggests that introverts develop their auxiliry function. So that the outside world will be more comfortable.

My suggestion to you is show your primary function. Let your guard down and show them the best that you've got!

Four Possible INTJ Subtypes

Four Possible INTJ Subtypes
EMBTI (Enneagram and MBTI Correlation)
As you all know, I have the utmost confidence in the MBTI. Cognitive functions are fascinating and revealing to the way we operate socially, personally, professionally, and intimately. However, I notice quite often how differently my fellow INTJs are from one another. No, I’m not talking about the fiasco about the cognitive function test the other day when most people were pissed about cognitive priority equating to INTP. It just seems that we may have different flavors.

Subtypes seemed like an option when I was reading about narcissist categories. I connected that thought to the Enneagram and the different wing types. This describes a standard type to take on some of the attributes either before or after the number. I have taken a few different Enneagram tests with the results: 1w9, 5w6, and mostly 5w4. While looking for actual data, I found the following chart from a recent study:

EMBTI.JPG
John Fudjack and Patricia Dinkelaker - Source (These are the results of empirical research that measures what the most common Enneagram types correspond with the MB types, in order of highest concentration to lower. This could possibly be the most reliable, accurate information for correlation.)

If you don’t know your Enneagram type, here is a reasonable test:
As I’ve mentioned before, I’m tired of reading repetitious information about INTJs. It’s time for new and creative ideas derived from everything we know about personality and behavior. I will now present the Four INTJ Subtypes.
The Purist
(1w9)

The most perfectionistic of the INTJs. Of the four subtypes, they are the most practical and disciplined. Purists’ standards are high of themselves and strive for excellence. Although not as introverted as other INTJs, they only want to be surrounded with people of a similar caliber. Unfortunately, this mode of thinking may leave a shortage of people to socially interact with. Others may see them as cold and driven. In fact, they have the ability to use failure towards evolution.

Because INTJs are known for future planning and finding connections, this type creates a system within the self to reach higher goals of a superior life. At their worst, they can be too critical of themselves and judgmental of others.

The Diplomat
(1w2)

While maintaining the general idea of how an INTJ operates, this subtype is more of a caring and nurturing variety. Diplomats want to extend or advocate created systems from obtained knowledge made through connections. This type may have a family or a cause which they apply their ability to realize patterns or teach knowledge.
This type is heavily motivated and extensive to whatever they have dedicated themselves to. Although they may be reserved in nature, they have a powerful voice that they activate through other resources. Spiritual growth highlights thoughts and insights to the world around them.

Diplomats may be afraid that they won’t be able to contribute something important or be appreciated. They have a passion for something ideal that comes from within and it drives them intensely.

The Arcanist
(5w4)

A cerebral INTJ that is more engrossed in the realm of thought. Seemly more eccentric that the other INTJ subtypes, they couldn't care less about conventions. This overall attitude conflicts with an ability to fit in whereas the Purist (1w9) and Diplomat (1w2) may blend into their surroundings due to their more practical appearance.
This type is less concerned with appearances because many of them have a focal point where the mind is absorbed with abstract theory or thought. Possibly, they have more of an artistic flair, these INTJs may write (fiction or nonfiction), have musical ability, or something that may set them apart with more of a strangeness than the other subtypes. They tend to be imaginative, aloof, and quiet.

Arcanist need time and quiet to reflect. This allows them to fully process while using intuition. At times, they may fluctuate from being disconnected from internal emotions and being overwhelmed by them.

The Genius
(5w6)

This INTJ is automatically perceived as an intellectual. The Genius has at least one area of study in which they are experts but they usually are well versed in other fields. Time and personal space is important to all INTJs but it is a theme and constantly on the mind of this subtype. They are clearly objective and unhindered by emotions. These traits allow them to conceive data and use it efficiently. They may fear being engulfed by crowds and are very sensitive to noise. Recharging is not a luxury, it is a necessity.

Geniuses are the most introverted of the INTJ subtypes and would prefer conversations that are deep and engaging to their intellect. Being cynical and dry-witted often leaves them misunderstood unless they associate with others of the same mind-set.  The Genius is mostly withdrawn and hides vulnerability. They stand back and observe. This allows them to see far more than what the five senses provide. A world-view is a primary mode of perception and details are consciously and subconsciously gathered for its construction.

So which type are you?

(On the internet, nobody knows you’re a cat.)

Copy and Pasted Personality

Have you ever read an INTJ description? Have you ever read multiple INTJ descriptions? Have you ever read an INTJ description that you found on the 32nd page of a Google search?

They are all the same.

INTJs are hard-working, independent, emotionless, single-minded, original, "Spock-like", strategic, analytical...blah...blah...

Don't misunderstand me, INTJs should have a few striking resemblances. The main one and most importantly should be:

INTROVERTED INTUITION

Now I've scoured through some reputable sources to bring this to you. Some Norwegian guy's, Gisle Henden, 189 paged dissertation titled, Intuition and its Role in Strategic Thinking, had made some valid points worth mentioning. In this excerpt, he paraphrases Westcott and associates Jung's Typology. Check it out:
Out of everything I have read, this is the most accurate description.

Intuition vs. Analysis

As I mentioned in the beginning of my blog, many INTJ descriptions include "analytical". My eyes would just stare at that word because I never really considered myself to be analytical. This is more of an ISTJ attribute with their ability to sense. Thankfully, my chosen read went into extensive detail, comparing the two. Check out this chart:

Rapid and non-sequential processing and paying little attention to my environment. Tiny mistakes that are usually the same and even. High confidence in answer but low in method.

Academia truly has the best MBTI descriptions...EVER!

The Seducer/Victim Types MBTI Comparison Compatibility Chart

If you are new to reading my blog, my past few posts have involved The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene. Here is a chart with the MBTI applied to the Seducer and Victim types along with the compatibility for these types. Feedback is appreciated. Enjoy making the correlations and finding the patterns!

The Seductive Coquette

This is the third post I’ve written in reference to Robert Greene’s Book, The Art of Seduction. Yes, it fascinates me till no end. While whisking through the words of comparable history of the darkest intent, I saw myself as one of the nine seducers. The description reminds me of comments made about my own demeanor. Not just how I behave in a relationship, but how my personality type is portrayed. The very seductress I am referring to is The Coquette

She is hot and cold. At one end of the spectrum, showing passion and fire and shifting to the cold and despondent. The historical significance of Josephine as the coquette and how driven Napoleon became as a result, gives the reader a clearer picture of its operation. She was cold in her correspondence and hardly prompt at replies. Sounds a bit like how I respond to phone calls and texts. The coquette is self-sufficient and never jealous. The victim samples a taste of captivating desire and is then doused with ice-cold indifference. From what I understand, this will drive a man mad with desire. He has to have this self-sufficient woman with her cat-like independence and confident ways.

But I’m not trying to seduce anyone, this is just how I am. In fact, you’ll find that most INTJs are this way. As an introvert, I need to recharge. Even if I am really into someone, I will back away. Also, when I’m and NOT into someone, I will back away. This creates problems at times, stalkers and obsessive types become entranced or mesmerized. It is a real eye opener to understand the seductive effective this can have.

After reading the entire book, I was disappointed that there wasn’t a direct correlation of what seducer/victim types are most commonly attracted. Greene does indicate that one should not seduce someone of the same type. Napoleon was The Conqueror victim type, a type I am not particularly fond of but have found myself trying to end those types of relationships. This being said any relationship involving an extrovert makes me want to bash my head into something obliterating. The Rescuer is easy to attract because a self-sufficient attitude may prevail, there is always a troubling situation in paradise that one may need saving from. I find the rescuer too controlling and aggravating.
Now that I am thinking about it, I wonder which victim type I find worthy of seducing.

(Not that I would ever do such a thing.)
